About the Provider
In 2006, he led a major expansion of the Emory Healthcare quality program with the formation of a new Emory Healthcare Office of Quality. The Office of Risk and Insurance Services merged with the Office of Quality in 2009, to form the Emory Healthcare Office of Quality and Risk, which Dr. Bornstein directs.
Dr. Bornstein has been a champion of system approaches to improving quality, including the development of new care models and the leveraging of information technology to this end. A major current focus is enterprise-wide care transformation built on a platform of a ""Lean"" enterprise operating system. This work has been initiated under the auspices of the James C. Kennedy Initiative funded by a generous gift from the James M. Cox Foundation.
Dr. Bornstein is a Board-certified internist and endocrinologist and continues to care for patients in the Emory Clinic. He received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Dartmouth College and his M.D. and Ph.D. (Cell & Molecular Biology) from the Medical College of Georgia. He did his internal medicine training at Duke, where he served as assistant chief resident, and his fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Bornstein stayed on at the MGH working on the molecular biology of calcium regulation in the laboratory of Dr. Henry Kronenberg, before moving to Atlanta in 1986.
Dr. Bornstein is a recognized national leader in quality, safety, and the use of information technology in improving healthcare delivery. He has served on a number of national committees and advisory bodies in these areas including the Clinical Evaluative Sciences Council Steering Committee and the Risk Adjustment Task Force of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), the Professional and Technical Advisory Committee for the hospital accreditation process of The Joint Commission, the Standards and Survey Procedures Committee of the Joint Commission, and the steering committee of the Integrating Quality Initiative of the Association of American Medical Colleges (which he chaired from 2014-2016).
Dr. Bornstein currently chairs the Vizient University HealthSystem Consortium Medical Leadership Network Steering Committee and co-chairs the Anthem National Advisory Panel on Value-Based Solutions and serves on the AHRQ PSNet Technical Expert Panel. In 2012, he was appointed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Governor’s Special Advisory Commission on Mandated Health Insurance Benefits and in 2014 to serve on the Governor’s Ebola Response Team. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation and the CHRISTUS Health Board Quality and Patient Safety Committee.

Dr. Bornstein is very caring, and can stay for a long time during the appointment to listen to every detail. After reviewing the chart, I see that he has written everything down. This makes me have great trust in him. He also messages me on Mychart about my labs and what we will do about them. He's always replying to my questions on Mychart and spends time ensuring that I will receive my medicine. Dr. Bornstein is overall a wonderful doctor and person who puts effort, time, and care in his patients. Thank you Dr. Bornstein.

Dr. Bornstein's care and compassion truly stand out. Managing diabetes can be stressful, but his kindness and thoroughness reassured me that I was in excellent hands. He took the time to explain all my treatment options clearly, which helped me feel informed and confident in my choices. Although I tend to feel anxious before doctor appointments, Dr. Bornstein immediately put me at ease, making the entire experience much more comfortable.
