About the Provider
Ms. Ponniah is a board-certified (ANCC) Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with 20 years of experience in Family Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree (BSN) from Coe College with minors in Biology and Chemistry, followed by a Masters (MSN) from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 2000.
Ms. Ponniah has experience in internal medicine and family practice which included women's health and pediatric care. She has experience in treating a variety of acute and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. She treats patients ages 2 and up.
Ms. Ponniah is a strong advocate of volunteering, both in the medical field and the community at large. She volunteers at the Physicians Care Clinic (PCC), Habitat for Humanity and providing food for the homeless. In addition, she believes in fostering the next generation of FNP providers and has been mentoring FNP students from Emory, Georgetown and Augusta University over the last 5 years.
Ms. Ponniah moved to Marietta in 2007 from Cary, North Carolina and has two children. She likes spending time in the outdoors and enjoys hiking and running.
She enjoys working in primary care because she sees the challenges of patients in the primary care environment and believes that she can make a difference in their quality of life. Her medical philosophy is that patients who can readily and consistently access primary care can lead longer, healthier lives. She believes in the patient narrative and that every patient is a unique human being with their own circumstances. Her patient care is centered around the belief that every patient deserves to have their story heard and to build a healing bond with their provider.
Apart from the Midwest and the South, Shivanthi has lived in Sri Lanka and Dubai and believes that her background gives her an appreciation and respect for diverse cultural perspectives and narratives.

My Chart refill requests were not responded to, leading to me running out of medication. I had to physically walk into the clinic to get help, was told to make appointment. When seen provider was unnecessarily defensive and evasive, deflecting responsibility as she tried to excuse the mishap, explaining ongoing administrative changes. I felt she did not express compassion nor willing to take ownership for the obvious lack of responses from my chart. She talked over me in the room, did not listen well. She did not handle the visit appropriately causing unnecessary escalation. I felt her first response to me should have been an apology and expression of empathy for my difficulties. That did not happen. I did not feel welcomed, cared for, instead left feeling lack of trust.I had to seek remedy with the Patient Affairs advocate. I was without medication for more than 1 week.

- 3 out of 5 starsReviewed on 12/3/2025
I was not happy that the care provider did not take the time to read the updated notes in my chart prior to my visit. I don't think it was my responsibility to volunteer to share what happened since the last visit I had. When my chart had all the records and notes that were available of the series of events/ procedure that had taken place. That leaves me with some unanswered questions.

Dr Ponniah Shavinthi always discuss alternatives solutions and treatments if need be. She a very ez person to communicate with and doesn't seem to be bothered with questions.
- 1 out of 5 starsReviewed on 4/8/2025
Mainly was answering questions the PA student repeatedly asked. The nurse practitioner was in the room for a minute at most. Then expressed that they were behind schedule. So they couldn't address any additional concerns. Especially when one takes off the day from work, sat patiently in the waiting room, and received a bill when no questions were answered. So overall a poor experience.
