About the Provider

About Dr. Gavaller
Monica Gavaller, MD, is a primary care physician and geriatric medicine specialist at Emory Wesley Woods. After graduating from the Medical College of George-University of Georgia in Athens, she competed internship and residency at Morehouse School of Medicine and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, both in Atlanta.”
Emphasis on listening
Spending time listening to her patients’ concerns is of the utmost importance, says Dr. Gavaller. “The patient is the expert on his or her own body,” she explains. “I can learn more from talking with them than from any book.”
She adds, “usually the diagnosis is right there, as the patient describes what it feels like and how it started. You can get everything you need from the patient.”
Personalized patient care
Dr. Gavaller works diligently to find answers to each patient’s problems and to determine the best strategies to manage their ailments.
Her training in geriatrics helps her understand certain problems that can often get overlooked. “The patient may live alone or on a limited income,” she explains. “The physical body might not work like it did before, with aches and pains that make it hard to get to appointments.”
She will work with each patient to provide the best care despite the problems. “We will strategize and personalize the treatment plan to accommodate any difficulties or unexpected complications that arise.”
Helping patients resume their lives
Dr. Gavaller’s ultimate goal is helping patients resume the life they want to live, on the terms they want to live it, as much as possible. “We want to make sure the patient gets back to their loved ones, to their lives and to what they enjoy. “
She adds: “I enjoy working with older people. They have great stories, and are so much wiser than me in many ways.”
