About the Provider

Michael A. Burke, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Emory University. Dr. Burke specializes in congestive heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac critical care. He completed medical school at Jefferson Medical College, followed by internal medicine and general cardiovascular diseases training at Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, he was a scholar in the Physician Scientist Training Program, studying pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying heart failure. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplantation medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Upon completion of his clinical training, Dr. Burke joined the Seidman Lab in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School as a post-doctoral research fellow, where he studied the molecular signaling networks that underlie the development of heart failure. During this time, he was also on staff as a heart failure physician at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center.

Dr. Burke’s research focuses on the molecular and genetic basis of cardiomyopathies and heart failure. In particular, he is actively engaged in research projects studying the epigenetic control of pathologic gene activation, the control of metabolic gene expression and the regulatory role played by cardiac fibroblasts and pro-fibrotic signaling in the progression to heart failure. Dr. Burke joined the faculty at Emory in 2016.

This was the best overall cardiologist appointment I have had. By that I mean, he was extremely knowledgeable about my genetic condition, explained things and gave a plan moving forward. Instead of disregarding my personal experience and saying things like that doesn't make sense or pushing it aside because maybe my testing didn't show anything wrong. He instead, listened to me, heard me, and explained why he thought that may be happening and what we could do going forward to figure it out. Instead of leaving and feeling unheard and disregarded, I felt hopeful finally for the first time after an appointment for my future and the possibility of fixing my symptoms or treating me to try to fix my symptoms. Other appointments have been good, but I have left feeling like they didn't know what to do or didn't believe me. Possibly pushing it off as anxiety. I love my life, I love to be active and all I want is to be as active as possible for as long as possible. I know all providers do the best they can with the information they know, and what I can say about Dr. Burke is he is my angel who has the knowledge that I have needed! I am forever thankful that our paths have crossed.
