About the Provider
About Dr. Saunders
Katharine Louis Saunders, MD, is a family medicine provider at Emory at Toco Hills with special interests in pediatrics, women’s health and mental health, as well as extensive experience in primary care procedures including common skin procedures, IUD insertion/removal, Nexplanon insertion/removal and more. She comes to Emory Healthcare from Iowa, where she was born and spent most of her life. While she loved the area and her patients, the thoughts of a gentler winter were appealing to both her and her husband. She’s excited to bring her experience and expertise as a physician to a health system with the reputation of Emory, while also enjoying the Atlanta area’s warmer weather.
A graduate of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Dr. Saunders took an unconventional path to becoming a physician. Before entering medical school, she spent several years as a counselor. With her counseling background, she has a unique ability to understand the difficulties patients face — and how to motivate them to make changes that will improve their health. She has a keen understanding of the importance of empathy and trust in building a relationship and helping patients feel comfortable when discussing their health. She’s also a strong believer in allowing people to set their own goals and respects that her patients’ choices might differ from choices she’d make for herself.
Your Time and Satisfaction Matter
As a family physician, Dr. Saunders enjoys working with people of all ages and the variety her work entails. Every day is different, and she likes the challenges and opportunities that come with that.
In Iowa, she was honored to receive frequent referrals from her patients. Those referrals sometimes resulted in her seeing three generations of people from the same family. Believing that her thoroughness, follow-through and respect for people’s time are among the qualities that keep patients coming to her, Dr. Saunders stays on track with her appointment schedule and is often able to speak with patients over the phone rather than having them return to the office if they need additional guidance or support after their visit.
Two of her three children are twins, and she attended medical school shortly after the twins were born, so she understands and appreciates how hectic people’s schedules can be. She aims to make appointments as easy and convenient as possible.
Sometimes, It’s OK to Have the Butter
In her spare time, Dr. Saunders enjoys gardening, spending time with her four grandchildren, animals and Taekwondo, a sport in which she has earned a black belt. She’s an accomplished sports photographer, as well. Her daughter participated in sports all the way through college, where she was a track athlete at the University of Iowa. Sad that other parents often couldn’t be at their children’s sporting events, she began taking pictures, so families could have memories of their child’s activities.
Another of Dr. Saunder’s favorite activities is cooking and she likes to make recipes of her own. As a physician, she tries to make them as healthy as possible but not if that comes at the expense of taste. Sometimes, it’s ok to have a little butter. That philosophy is in line with what Dr. Saunders tells her patients. “You don’t have to be perfect,” she says. “If you don’t make the healthiest choice early in the day, you can still make a healthier choice later. The effort you put in over time is what matters most.”

I really like Dr. Saunders, but...a year ago I had my entire back fused! Now I have neuropathy in my feet! Im going to be 70 years old! For some reason Dr. Saunders does not want to discuss giving me a Handicapped placard! I don't use a walker, except if I'm walking in my neighborhood! I have good days and bad days! Other than that, I'm happy with her!

I do not believe my heart/ lungs were listened to or checked. Most I have been to usually do this as standard procedure. It didn't occur to me until after I had left the practice. However, I did have an EKG and the Dr.did mention something could be abnormal and did a referral for cardiology, which I highly appreciate. Thank you.

The doctor did her best to explain things and give treatment suggestions for prevention of my problem. But this was an old problem had already been addressed (unsuccessfully) by another PCP and an Emory specialist doctor for more than a year. The prevention info was not new. This new doctor had never seen me before. I forgot to ask the main questions I had which had brought urgency to situation and likely why I also got an appointment so fast from triage nurse on phone. I did a poor job of explaining my latest problem. I forgot to mention one reason for appointment was due to sudden very high blood pressure readings at home. The doctor didn't get that info due to inaccurate reading from nurse, which was my fault due to my suggestion to lift my arm (but not THAT high!) when she took my BP. My face had been flushed for 2 days. After appointment, I noticed that my face temperature said 99.7 (instead of usual 97) on my chart and that was not from a hot car or sunburn. Maybe it was cooler by the time the doctor saw me.

- 3 out of 5 starsReviewed on 1/8/2026
Dr Saunders prioritized her medical recommendation (and to be clear, she was very up front about it from the outset) based on limiting her risk/liability with her patient versus being more open to a prescription that has worked well with another patient over a long period of use. I respect her experience and coaching, but she literally said: "I will not take the risk of being responsible for a patient having an adverse reaction to this drug". My perception of that statement was "I am worried about being sued for malpractice, so I don't prescribe that drug anymore". That is probably a misperception but sharing if that feedback is helpful. In general I have always appreciated Dr Saunder's approach to our relationship as she typically seeks to understand my situation and discusses various approaches/solutions. There are some visits where she Is having a busy day or Is not In the best mood, and today's visit seemed to reflect a strained discussion. Some examples why:1. She started the conversation with "so you want medication to help with your sleeping Issues?". I did not say I had sleeping Issues and had provided a long email In advance of the visit to explain I used Ambien for managing jet lag for International travel. I don't expect Dr Saunders to study every chart/info before an exam, but If she wasn't aware of my situation then the conversation might have been more productive If she started with "so tell me about your Issue" or "how can I help?". I went back over my request and my prior use of Ambien, and Dr Saunders responded with her explanation of why she doesn't prescribe it. 2. When we discussed alternatives she recommended (which were much appreciated) I sought some clarity about the effects of both alternatives as I wanted to understand dosage and after effects as I was looking for a medication that would target a similar 8 hour effect that Ambien had previously had. Dr Saunders responded that "well, you are only looking for a medication to help you fall asleep, so that really doesn't matter". I had to share again that my previous experience with Ambien was that it forced a sleep period of 8 hours (full tablet) 4 hours half tablet, so I was seeking a prescription that would have similar effect. At this point I expressed some frustration that we seemed to be on different pages with respect to objectives. 3. After this exchange Dr Saunders was visibly agitated. She finalized the prescription, had me sit on the exam table, quickly went through the motions of putting a stethoscope on my chest, and then said goodbye and left the room. I wish to apologize if my comments caused Dr Saunders to become frustrated. I was not trying to be combative, but was definitely frustrated myself as it seemed the majority of our time was spent listening to Dr Saunders explain why she was averse to prescribing a drug versus showing an understanding of what care/help I was looking for. I will add that the after care notes in the portal did a VERY good job of reflecting what I was describing as the primary objective for this medication, so I thank Dr Saunders for taking the time to provide that detail in the record.

Contacting her was great, and I appreciate the time she spent with me. That said, I'm looking for a provider who aligns more with the Health at Every Size philosophy-someone who values body diversity and focuses on lifestyle, nutrition, and mental health instead of relying heavily on BMI. I don't feel this provider is the best fit, as she references BMI at each visit and recommended eliminating foods like chips, which feels restrictive. With my nutritionist, I've been working for years to move away from that approach, so I'd prefer care that supports that perspective.

Had prescribed me the wrong medication, Has diagnosis on mychart, I have never spoken to any provider about. Asked me follow up questions. Never examined me. Spent less than 15 min with me.

I had an unpleasant experience with Dr. Saunders. This was my first visit to this clinic, so there was no baseline medical history provided other than what information was discussed in my intake with the nurse and medical student (who were both very pleasant). I felt Dr. Saunders was very rushed (to no fault of her own, it is possible she was booked back-to-back though there were not many people in the waiting room); she took the information I gave to the medical student and immediately said she could prescribe medication for the issue without any discussion on past experience with medication. The most alarming part of my visit was being told I should be eating 1300 calories per day (an extremely low amount for an adult of my age and activity level to consume) without any insight to what my current caloric or macronutrient intake, BMR, or activity level is. I feel naive to have believed primary care physicians would have any advanced training on nutrition beyond the small amount learned in medical school and residency. Medication was also one of the first suggestions made, again without any questions about my past medication history. Overall, there was no effort made by Dr. Saunders to ask me anything about my life, habits, or experiences and instead I was just told what to do--not the kind of relationship I would like to have with my PCP and so I will be looking elsewhere for another provider.
