Had met Dr. Riella earlier when my daughter was at Emory as part of her kidney recipient evaluation. He took time to talk to us about future pancreas transplant, the how and why. I particularly remember his remark about "the pancreas protects the kidney" as moving in contemplating another major surgery for my daughter, type 1 diabetes since age 5. This has been a long journey for us both as a child with a serious medical condition and as the Mother trying to balance wanting to and letting her be a kid but keeping her healthy as well as getting my own needs met. Obviously the pancreatic surgery is her decision but hearing this and the fearlessness with which Dr. Riella goes about complex surgery is both inspiring but also comforting since, as a Mother, this is scary.

Dr. Riella the transplant surgeon and Dr. Basu nephrologist were so amazing , loving and compassionate. Their beautiful spirit alone has given me enough hope to leave my appointment with such optimism and strength. I thank God for them and for this experience.
