About the Provider
Decisions about whether and when to become pregnant are best made by people who have the medical information and support they need. That knowledge allows them to make the right choices, and it’s what OBGYN Carrie Cwiak focuses on providing to her patients. As a complex family planning specialist, Dr. Cwiak delivers contraceptive and abortion care to women with challenging and high-risk medical conditions.
Dr. Cwiak’s interest in obstetrics and gynecology developed at a young age. While still in high school, she began working in her local hospital's postpartum and labor and delivery units. It sparked an interest that led her to medical school and, eventually, a rotation at Emory University School of Medicine. Ultimately, she completed a fellowship in complex family planning at Emory, where she directs that fellowship program today. A recognized expert in the field, she coauthors the latest edition of Contraceptive Technology, one of the nation’s leading family planning textbooks. She also participates in research focusing on new contraceptive development and improving access to contraceptive care.
As a physician, Dr. Cwiak sees both adults and adolescents. She recognizes the importance of listening to her patients and understanding their unique backgrounds, beliefs, values and what matters most to them. She prides herself on providing empathetic, nonjudgmental support for patients, even at a vulnerable time in their lives.
Outside of work, Dr. Cwiak enjoys spending time with her partner, who is also an Emory physician, playing with their dog, yoga, podcasts (mysteries are her favorite), and taking part in community events. A native of California, Dr. Cwiak has been a resident of the Atlanta area for more than 20 years and is happy to call it home.

Dr. Cwiak took the time to answer all my questions. She sat with me for almost an hour to make sure that I understood everything. She provided the most attentive care that I have ever recieved from a doctor at Emory. She did not act rushes or like she needed to run to the next appt. I genuinely felt like she cared and like I was human (not just another patient to see that day).

I did not like the doctor. She asked invasive questions that were not necessary. And she seemed dismissive. She rushed out without saying goodbye or even explaining the procedure for my vaccine

Very good experience for my first well woman exam. My provider made me feel comfortable throughout the whole process. She answered all my questions, comforted me, and informed me of my care what I should do.
